Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale 2026
Lot 100 bay colt Pierata – Berimbau (Shamardal) $400,000 (draft: Yulong Stud)
From the same sale ring, from the same family, now the next chapter. This colt arrived with serious star quality written all over him and we just had to continue on with this family Te Akau loves!
The colt is a half-brother to World Champion Sprinter Imperatriz, whom David Ellis purchased at the corresponding sale in 2020, and she was trained by Te Akau to win 10 Group One races, including six in Australia.
Her six Group One wins in 2023 was more than any other horse worldwide, and during her career she earned the titles of New Zealand Champion Sprinter/Miler (twice), Champion 3YO, Australian Champion Sprinter (2023/24), and was honoured with both the NZTR Outstanding Global Achievement Award and New Zealand Horse of the Year (2024).
Purchased for $360,000 by David Ellis CNZM at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale 2020, from the draft of Bhima Thoroughbreds, Imperatriz was owned by Te Akau Invincible Empress Racing Partnership (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM).
Imperatriz retired in May 2024 after 27 starts (19 wins, 4 placings) and earned over A$7 million, later selling for a record A$6.6 million as a broodmare. Her filly by Pierata (Pierro) was born in September 2025, marking her successful transition to breeding.
The colt is by Group One winner Pierata, a young sire son of Pierro (Lonhro), the quintessential racehorse and Champion First and Second Season Sire in Australia, who only ever ran in stakes races, winning 11 of his 14 starts and amassed $4.5 million in prize money.
Pierata stands at the Yulong Stud, alongside Champion Sire and sire of sires Written Tycoon (Iglesia).
Pierata won the stallion-making All-Aged Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m) at Randwick, and his oldest progeny are four-year-olds. He also placed four times at Group One level, won The Shorts (Gr. 2, 1100m) and Missile Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m), Sydney Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m), and Vo Rogue Plate (Gr. 3, 1300m).
From his first crop, Pierata produced stakes winning sprinters Tobeornottobe and Coleman, the latter placed twice at Group One level, while siring nearly 80 individual winners to date.
“He is a good-walking colt, with a lovely temperament, and we know the mare has the ability to produce high quality progeny,” Ellis said.
“Once she finished racing, Imperatriz was bought by Mr. Zhang at Yulong Stud, and her first foal is by Pierata too.”
