By the triple Champion Sire in Australia, I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), out of a stakes’ producing mare, and direct descendant of a Derby winner, comes a beautifully prepared and muscular filly.
Te Akau bought and trained the greatest horse by I Am Invincible, Imperatriz, whom David Ellis purchased at the Gold Coast Sale in 2020, and she won 10 Group One races.
The Logines Highest Rated Mare and Best Sprinter in the World, Imperatriz was also crowned Australian Champion Sprinter, Champion 3YO, Champion Sprinter/Miler in New Zealand, and New Zealand Horse of the Year.
Retired and sold in June 2024 for $6.6 million, becoming the highest priced filly or mare ever sold in the Southern Hemisphere, Imperatriz recorded 10 Group One wins, from 1000m – 1600m, among 19 victories from 27 starts, and nearly NZ$7.6 million in prize money.
With progeny winning over 3500 races, including more than 270 stakes wins, I Am Invincible is a thoroughbred stallion phenomenon, who, in addition to topping the Australian General Sires’ List three times, was also Champion First Season Sire and Champion 2YO Sire.
Dam Isola Blu has proven herself as a broodmare, with four individual winners of 19 races, including the dual stakes winner Solaia (Toronado). She is by the beautifully bred classic racehorse Blackfriars (Danehill), winner of the Victoria Derby (Gr. 1, 2500m), and the sire of over 100 stakes wins.
The sire of granddam Capri Blue is of particular interest. Her sire, Bluebird (Storm Bird), is a high-quality influence in any pedigree, but represented by only a select band of mares in Australasia, and the sire of million-dollar winner Giovana.
Not too many fillies win Derbies, but third dam, Capricious Lass (Carry a Smile), did just that in the Western Australian Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m).
“She’s a filly with a lovely temperament and a beautiful way of going, and we think she’s the type to race as a two-year-old and keep getting better and better as a three, four, and five-year-old,” Ellis said.
“We have had so much success with fillies by this incredible sire (I Am Invincible) and we’re always on the lookout for his fillies that really appeal to us.
“She really is a beautiful filly, perfectly put together, and we’re thrilled to have purchased her from the stud that stands I Am Invincible.”
The filly has a nicely balanced cross of Danzig – the sire of Danehill – in her pedigree, on the sire line of both I Am Invincible and Blackfriars. She also has a bloodline cross to Sir Ivor – winner of the Epsom Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) – and sire of legendary stallion Sir Tristram.
