Lot 108 bay colt Derryn – Secret Spirit (Swiss Ace) $100,000 (draft: Grangewilliam Stud)

The colt is from a phenomenal family of winners, going back to Wellington Cup (Gr. 1, 3200m) winner Daria’s Fun (Go Fun), who recorded 12 wins, and New Zealand Cup (Gr. 2, 3200m) winner Waltermitty (Grosvenor).

Renowned for producing tough and versatile horses, Derryn (Hinchinbrook) is the sire of New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Leica Lucy, who swept all before her as a three-year-old winning six of seven starts including the New Zealand Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m).

Derryn is also the sire of recent Thorndon Mile (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Doctor Askar, who just continues to get better as he matures.

Dam Secret Spirit, by another very durable producer Swiss Ace (Secret Savings), was a stakes winning two-year-old in the Great Northern Foal Stakes (Listed, 1400m) and Ryder Stakes (Listed, 1200m), who carried on at three to win the O’Leary’s Fillies Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m).

Third dam Dastaria (Stark South) was an impressive middle-distance winner, scoring four times to 2100m, but really came to note as a broodmare when producing five individual winners of 29 races.

“He’s from a great farm and breeder at Grangewilliam Stud, whose horses are very natural, have great temperaments, and they’ve produced a really good-bodied colt here,” said David Ellis.

“The sire, Derryn, has shown he can produce a top-quality horse and Leica Lucy was simply outstanding in what she achieved as a three-year-old.

“It’s a prolific family of winners, of which we’ve seen a lot of them race over the years in New Zealand, and this colt is a fine example of the what the family can produce.
