Karaka Yearling Sales 2026
Lot 134 bay colt Savabeel – Sleeping Beauty (Rip Van Winkle) $240,000 (draft: Pencarrow Stud)
Te Akau principal David Ellis has achieved enormous success buying yearlings from Pencarrow Stud, most notably five-time Group One winner and Champion Sire Darci Brahma (Danehill) and his three-quarter brother Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice), winner of five stakes races and a high-quality stallion.
In addition, Ellis has bought Group One winning Savabeel colts that are now stud: Embellish, Cool Aza Beel, and Noverre, and other Group One winners: Probabeel (4), a dual NZ Horse of the Year, Prise De Fer, Amarelinha (NZB Filly of the Year), Hall Of Fame, Sword Of Osman, Skew Wiff, The Perfect Pink, and a host of other stakes winners by this remarkable sire.
The colt is bred on the same Savabeel/Rip Van Winkle cross as Noverre.
By Savabeel, Ellis also purchased Damask Rose as a yearling at Karaka, and last year she won the $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (Restricted Listed, 1600m) and inaugural running of the $3.5m NZB Kiwi (Restricted Listed, 1500m).
While on Karaka Millions Night, Te Akau trainers Mark Walker & Sam Bergerson produced another Savabeel rising star filly when Belle Cheval impressively won the Almanzor Trophy (Gr. 3, 1200m), having finished third in the 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) at her previous start.
The colt is out of impressive winner Sleeping Beauty, by triple Group One winner and World Champion Miler Rip Van Winkle (Galileo), the sire of dual Group One winner Te Akau Shark.
Sleeping Beauty was a mare with a great turn of foot, that won 10 races to 1400m, including at Listed and Group Three levels.
Granddam Kailey Princess, by legendary sire Danehill (Danzig), won three races to 1500 metres, and became a great producer with eight individual winners of 22 races.
“He’s a beautifully put together colt by a breeder and stud that we know so well,” said David Ellis.
“We’ve obviously had success buying the same pedigree cross, with Noverre winning the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) and now a fledgling sire at Waikato Stud.
“He’s strikes us a real Guineas type of colt, as well, and there is a lot of quality in this colt for the price.”
The colt has bloodline crosses to high-class Champion Sire Nureyev, a racehorse with immense turn of foot, Champion French 3YO, and sire of more than 20 champions, and a cross to his sire, the immortal Northern Dancer.
