Lot 152 brown colt Too Darn Hot – Spritz (Thorn Park) $320,000 (draft: Beaufort Downs)
Not only is the colt from a family that Te Akau has experienced plenty of success, but he is a direct descendant of magnificent race mare Seamist (Beaufort Sea).
Winner of 12 races, Seamist highlighted her career winning the Auckland Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m), Japan/NZ Trophy (Gr. 2, 1600m), along with two Group Three victories, six Listed wins and numerous stakes places. She then became the producer of seven individual winners of 32 races.
Ellis purchased dam Spritz as a yearling at Karaka, along with stakes placed five-time winner and Group Two producer Miss Thorn (Thorn Park), debut stakes winner Aotea Lad (Savabeel), who ranked third highest rated Two-Year-Old, and his dam Corsage (Volksraad).
Corsage, from Spray (Entrepreneur), in turn from Seamist, was a winner on debut and Joint Second Top Filly on the 2008-09 2YO Free Handicaps.
Corsage placed in both the Diamond Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) and Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m), unlucky fifth in the Karaka Million (Restricted Listed, 1200m), as a two-year-old, with stakes placed finishes in the Ray Coupland Stakes (Listed, 1400m), Sunline Vase (Listed, 2100m), and fourth in the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m).
The colt is by young sire Too Darn Hot, a shuttle stallion between Europe and Australia, and son of Dubawi (Dubai Millenium), who ranks third in the TRC Global Sire Rankings.
Champion First & Second Season Sire in Australia, Too Darn Hot is establishing himself as a high-class sire, globally, and carries on a remarkable Dubawi / Dubai Millenium lineage.
He has already sired 31 stakes winners – 18 Group One winners – including the Champion Two-Year-Old and Champion Three-Year-Old Colt in Australia, Broadsiding, winner of four Group One races and nearly $4m in prize money, and Fallen Angel, a five-time European Group One winner.
“We know this family very well and we feel he is great value given the overall quality he has as a physical specimen – absolutely outstanding,” said David Ellis.
“He’s by a sire that is taking the world by storm, and this colt has the makings of a two-year-old, and like Miss Thorn and Corsage, then train on to be a 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) colt.
“There are some outstanding horses that we’ve bought and trained out of this family. The breeders are among the finest you’d find anywhere, and stemming from the incredible race mare and producer Seamist, it’s just great blood.”
The colt has a bloodline cross to Champion Sire and breed shaper Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer), on the dam line of both Too Darn Hot and Spritz.
