Karaka Yearling Sales 2026
Lot 203 chestnut filly Russian Revolution – Two Illicit ($340,000) (draft: Trelawney Stud)
She is the second foal out of very impressive winning filly and mare Two Illicit, Equal Third NZ 3YO Filly, by five-time Group One winning stallion Jimmy Choux (Thorn Park), she won both the Waikato Guineas (Gr. 2, 2000m) and Royal Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m) as a three-year-old, and went on to win the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m) and Travis Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m), while recording eight wins from 1400m – 2000m.
She was dynamic racehorse, Two Illicit, one that could take a sit and produce a sprint that was generally unbeatable. Having the ability to quicken is the lifeline to success for any thoroughbred, and Two Illicit had it in spades – and in many cases these mares pass that ability on to their progeny.
Granddam Gemini is by Tale of the Cat, an athletically gifted sire by legendary Champion Sire Storm Cat (Storm Bird), and sire of Te Akau bought and trained 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Tell A Tale.
The filly is by Russian Revolution, a dual Group One winning sprinter in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr. 1, 1100m) and The Galaxy (Gr. 1, 1100m), he commenced stud duties in 2018 at Newgate Farm, and going from strength to strength as a sire.
A son of four-time Champion Sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Russian Revolution is among the Top 10 sires for winners this season in the Australian General Sires’ List.
Leading Australian First Season Sire for 2021-22, Russian Revolution has sired over 260 individual winners, 14 stakes winners, including Group One winners Libertad and Communist, along with the outstanding triple Group Two and Group Three winner Revolutionary Miss, also dual Group One placed.
Interestingly, high-class broodmare sire Stravinsky (Nureyev) is the damsire of Russian Revolution, along with five-time Group One winner Lankan Rupee and stallion Rip Van Winkle.
Te Akau has already had success with progeny by Russian Revolution, with Lara Antipova emerging as one of the outstanding two-year-olds this season in New Zealand.
An impressive eight-length winner on debut in December, Lara Antipova emulated the performance when winning the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) by four and a half lengths.
Unbeaten in two starts, Lara Antipova is preparing for the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) on 14 February.
“It’s always a pleasure to buy from Trelawney Stud, because they’re meticulous in their breeding operation, matings, and the success they have experienced is second to none,” said David Ellis.
“Like everyone, we were impressed with Two Illicit on the race track and she showed an unbelievable turn of foot to win her races.
“The filly is very much like her mother when it comes to markings and colouring, and she’s a beautiful type of filly by a top young sire.”
The filly has bloodline crosses to the finest breed shaping stallions in history, namely Champion Sires Nureyev, Danzig, Storm Bird, and Mr. Prospector. A better mating would be hard to find.
