Karaka Yearling Sales 2026
Lot 348 grey filly Savabeel – Chiaretta (Makfi) $260,000 (draft: Elsdon Park)
The filly is by Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m) winning three-year-old and 10-time Champion Sire Savabeel, who serves so well the trilogy of breed shaping stallions in New Zealand: Savabeel – Zabeel – Sir Tristram.
No other buyer (David Ellis) or stable (Te Akau Racing) has had more success with the progeny of Savabeel.
Ellis has selected, bought, and Te Akau has trained more Group One winning and Group winning progeny by Savabeel than anyone else.
The list includes Group One winners now at stud: Embellish, Cool Aza Beel, and Noverre, and other Group One winners: Probabeel (4), a dual NZ Horse of the Year, Prise De Fer, Amarelinha (NZB Filly of the Year), Hall Of Fame, Sword Of Osman, Skew Wiff, The Perfect Pink, and a host of other stakes winners by this remarkable sire.
Ellis also purchased Damask Rose (Savabeel) as a yearling at Karaka, and last year she won the $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (Restricted Listed, 1600m) and inaugural running of the $3.5m NZB Kiwi (Restricted Listed, 1500m).
While on Karaka Millions Night, Te Akau trainers Mark Walker & Sam Bergerson produced another Savabeel rising star filly when Belle Cheval impressively won the Almanzor Trophy (Gr. 3, 1200m), having finished third in the 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) at her previous start.
Dam Chiaretta, a winner over 1200 metres, by impactful Group One producing sire Makfi, who sired dual NZ Horse of the Year Bonneval, a triple Group One winner, and Australian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m) winner Sofia Rosa, is in turn a son of TRC Third Highest Ranked Sire Dubawi (Dubai Millennium).
Chiaretta is already the sire of a stakes placed winning sister to the filly, Macaluso (Savabeel), while the descending dam line sires Flying Spur (Danehill) and Rory’s Jester (Crown Jester) each won the Golden Slipper (Gr. 1, 1200m) and became Champion Sires.
“She has been beautifully prepared by the team at Elsdon Park, who are emerging not only as a nursery with a high-class band of broodmares, but also a significant breeder at the top commercial levels,” said David Ellis.
“She is an outstanding filly in every respect, not just in her beautiful colouring, but a wonderful type by New Zealand’s Champion Sire.
“She’s very athletic, a great mover, and while there was plenty of competition to by her, we were thrilled to come out on top.”
