Lot 499 bay colt Dundeel – Luna Mia (Redoute’s Choice) $170,000 (draft: Arrowfield Stud)
The colt is by six-time Group One winner Dundeel, by six-time Group One winner and sire of sires High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells), and out of a mare by three-time Champion Broodmare Sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill).
A remarkable racehorse, Dundeel stamped himself as well above average when winning on debut as a two-year-old at Ellerslie. He won the Australian Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) on the bridle by six lengths, ended his career winning the $4m Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m, and racked up titles on both sides of the Tasman: Champion 3YO and Horse of the Year in New Zealand, and Champion Middle Distance horse in Australia.
At stud, the progeny of Dundeel have recorded over 1300 wins, including 78 stakes wins.
Waikato Stud is fortunate to stand his Group One winning son Super Seth, Champion First & Second Season Sire in New Zealand, while Te Akau trained Yourdeel won two Group One races and became Champion Two-Year-Old.
The Dundeel / Redoute’s Choice cross has already proved highly successful, including Super Seth and dual Group One winner Celestial Legend.
Young mare and dam Luna Mia won four races to 1400 metres, and already produced smart debut winner Quickaz (Written Tycoon), while granddam Luna Bella, by outstanding international broodmare sire Stravinsky (Nureyev), is a sister to Group Two winner Hips Don’t Lie, the dam of debut stakes winner and young Coolmore Stud sire Acrobat (Fastnet Rock), while in turn she is also the granddam of Champion 2YO Filly in Australia, Learning To Fly (Justify).
Stravinsky is the dam sire of five-time Group One winner Lankan Rupee and stallions Rip Van Winkle and Russian Revolution.
“He’s a good moving colt, with an outstanding pedigree, and really looks a three-year-old Classics type horse,” said David Ellis.
“We have enormous respect for both the sire (Dundeel) and of course you cannot get much better than having Redoute’s Choice as the dam sire.
“It’s a really good family, with plenty of black type performing fillies and colts, including the promising sire Acrobat.
“He’s been beautifully prepared for sale by Arrowfield Stud, where Dundeel stands, and there is a lot of quality in this colt for the price we paid for him.”
The colt has a bloodline cross through his sire lines to Northern Dancer, along with double ups to Nureyev and “blue hen” mare Special, the dam of Nureyev and granddam of Sadler’s Wells.
