Description

Lot 62 brown colt Russian Revolution – Queen Zyrah (Written Tycoon) $100,000 (draft: Mapperley Stud).

A son of four-time Champion Sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Russian Revolution was a dual Group One winning sprinter in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr. 1, 1100m) and The Galaxy (Gr. 1, 1100m), commenced stud duties in 2018 at Newgate Farm, and going from strength to strength as a sire.

Russian Revolution is among the Top 10 sires for winners this season in the Australian General Sires’ List.

Leading Australian First Season Sire for 2021-22, Russian Revolution has sired over 260 individual winners, 14 stakes winners, including Group One winners Libertad and Communist, along with the outstanding triple Group Two and Group Three winner Revolutionary Miss, also dual Group One placed.

Interestingly, high-class broodmare sire Stravinsky (Nureyev) is the damsire of Russian Revolution, along with five-time Group One winner Lankan Rupee and stallion Rip Van Winkle.

Te Akau has already had success with progeny by Russian Revolution, with Lara Antipova emerging as one of the outstanding two-year-olds this season in New Zealand.

An impressive eight-length winner on debut in December, Lara Antipova emulated the performance when winning the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) by four and a half lengths.

Unbeaten in two starts, Lara Antipova is preparing for the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) on 14 February.

The colt is the second foal out of Queen Zyrah, winner of four races to 1300 metres, by Champion Sire and sire of sires Written Tycoon (Iglesia), who is establishing himself as a broodmare sire, with six stakes winners in the role, including Australian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2000m) winner Vibrant Sun (The Autumn Sun).

Granddam Wabeel, a dual winner to 1600 metres, is by Commands (Danehill), an outstanding sire and that of Te Akau bought and trained dual Horse of Year Melody Belle, the New Zealand record-holder of 14 Group One wins.

The dam line pedigree keeps getting better, with third dam Yabeel being by Champion Sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram), and Yabeel is half-sister to outstanding NZ-trained Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m) winner Solvit (Morcon), who won 15 races.

“He reminded us of Lara Antipova, with his markings and plenty of leg,” said David Ellis.

“He’s doing a great job stud, Russian Revolution, and leaving horses of size and scope that have good amounts of natural ability.

“He looks to have the right physical attributes to race as a two-year-old, but also the pedigree and type to stretch over more ground as he matures.”

The colt carries a bloodline cross to breed shaping Champion Sire Danehill (Danzig), on the sire line of Russian Revolution and dam line of Queen Zyrah.
